What is the most efficient and effective way to assess the stress levels experienced by passengers in the airport?

Our partners, the Institute of Computer and Communication Systems and the University of Nottingham, are working hard to answer this very question. As one of the principle aims of PASSME is to improve the airport experience for at least 70 percent of passengers, testing the impact of PASSME innovations on stress levels will be key to the project’s success. They are currently testing smartwatches which may offer some insight into this.  So far, the team has tested two smartwatches- the Sony Smartband 2 and Empatica E4. Each smartwatch offers different measurements and features which will be useful for our research. In the coming months, the watches will be used by PASSME partners to generate a bank of baseline data. This data will be used to assess the accuracy of the watches; their usability; and the baseline stress levels of ‘passengers’ outside of the airport environment.

Once an individual smartwatch is chosen for our research, the study will then begin. It is comprised of three distinct phases:

Training Phase
During the training phase, the study participants will be required to attend a training session the week before the data gathering phase. They will complete an application with basic demographic questions. They will then be required to complete a health assessment form, as this will allow researchers to explore differences in the health statuses of individual participants. They will then be introduced to the smartphone and mobile application which they will be required to use throughout the study.

Data Collection Phase
In the second phase of the study, in a 5-day period, each participants’ physiological data and mobile diary entries will be gathered. Participants will be required to wear a heart rate monitor as they carry on with their daily routine. As their physiological measurements are being recorded, they will complete a mobile diary through a smartphone application. This will allow PASSME researchers to put their stress levels in context throughout the day.


Post-Study Interview Phase
Following the data collection phase, each study participant will be questioned about their week and any stressful experiences they had during that time. They will also be asked about the usability of the heart rate tracker and the mobile application. This will allow our researchers to develop an overall ‘story’ of the participant’s week. Once the interviews are completed, the data which has been collected will be analysed. Trends in stress levels will be explored at both an hour-to-hour level and whole day level. The Likert-scale questions which passenger will be asked in the mobile application will be used to assess different levels of stress (contentment, distress and engagement).

Personas will then be corresponded with each of the participant’s results. The personas will complement the personas identified as part of Task1.2 in the project and which are reported in the overview of the state of the art requirements PASSME deliverable.
It is going to be a busy summer for our researchers who are working on this area of PASSME research.
